CEU's are Optional, but Rewarded
BPI Certified individuals are encouraged to continue their education by earning BPI CEU's (continuing education units) through webinars, conferences, additional training, training others, and publishing building science related materials. Refresh Homes offers approved BPI CEU's in the form of 2, 4, or 6 hour Contractor Mentoring sessions that are typically field trainings based on individual needs.
When recertifying without approved CEU's, BPI requires individuals to retake all tests including the 100-Question initial online test. When recertifying with 10-29 CEU's, BPI requires individuals to take field exams and 50-Question tests for each certification. For individuals with 30 or more CEU's, BPI only requires field tests (no online tests!) for each certification. BPI CEU's must be verifiable, documented submitted and approved education accomplishments completed during a 3-year certification. Multifamily designations do not have CEU incentives.
According to BPI's CEU Policy, "...qualifying subject matter is quite broad. Anything reasonably deemed to be whole-house related can be considered qualifying on a 1:1 basis (1 hour of training = 1 CEU). CEU's earned for other inspection associations, construction seminars, and code enforcement trainings, specialized house diagnostic/reporting software, and sales/marketing may be accepted, but at a lower rate than whole-house sessions. Breaks and lunches are not considered in a course's overall CEU value. Repeat courses are not eligible for continuing education credit."
Qualifying CEU Training Topics and Value
BPI assigns varying values to CEU's based on the topic according to the following chart:
| Topic | Maximum Value | Example |
|---|---|---|
| BPI Whole-house session | 1:1 | (1 hour of training equals 1 CEU) |
| Specialized Software | 2:1 | (2 hours of training equals 1 CEU) |
| Construction Services | 2:1 | (2 hours of training equals 1 CEU) |
| Sales and Marketing | 3:1 | (3 hours of training equals 1 CEU) |
| Building Code Sessions | 3.5:1 | (3.5 hours of training equals 1 CEU) |
| Primary Certification Training | 4:1 | (4 hours of training equals 1 CEU) |
| BPI Survey (7 questions) | 30:1 | (2 minutes of survey equals .5 CEU) |
Activities for Earning CEU's
BPI requires proof of the CEU's and imposes a maximum according to the following chart:
| Activity | Maximum per Year | Required Proof |

Requirements for Submitting Courses for CEU’s
- Provide outline of topics from training (may be obtained from trainer).
- Provide number of teaching hours.
- Provide proof of attendance in the form of a certificate or note from the training organization (proof of payment is not sufficient).
- Submit no sooner than 1 month prior to expiration date of certification.
Verification of CEU's
Any CEU's approved and any values credited to you must be verified through the Candidate Portal using your Candidate ID number and your password. The approved credits on record at the Candidate Portal will be used to determine the reward, if any, of lesser testing at recertification. Make sure the Portal data is correct.
If you forget your Candidate ID or password, you can request to reset your password or have your BPI ID emailed to you at the email address on file with BPI. If your email address changes, you must notify BPI.
